MODELING AND SIMULATION DIVISION

M&S Division's new PODCAST

Adam Collins discusses his extensive experience as an industrial engineer in numerous modeling and simulation projects, primarily in the automotive industry. Adam also provides his perspectives on the value of simulation in problem solving, some of the barriers to simulation that may be encountered in practice and how to be successful as a modeling and simulation practitioner.

ABOUT THE DIVISION

Modeling and simulation (M&S) is a critical discipline that examines how to construct and analyze decision-making scenario models that can be applied in a wide variety of application areas. These models are widely used in understanding complex systems in both general and specific scenarios. The huge popularity of the field can be seen in the wide set of application areas such as manufacturing, transportation, government and healthcare, along with its ability to drive increasingly high quality animation. Advances in computing power and efficient computation methodologies have allowed M&S to be used to solve increasingly large problems. M&S is especially valuable in the design, modification, and evaluation of many complex systems and inter-dependent decisions. The applications of M&S is virtually limitless and so is the demand for this division.

M&S has been in use for more than four decades, and it is a fast growing area in industrial and systems engineering. The creation of the M&S Division within the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineering (IISE) is an important addition especially with the change in the Institute name and the extended focus to include systems engineers. While multiple divisions within the IISE apply M&S in solving problems within their focal areas, there is no one division currently concentrating on this critical set of tools independent of the specific application area. The M&S Division will provide the means to deliver focused topical contents to its membership. It will offer a new benefit to attract more scholars, practitioners, and students to join the IISE.

The M&S Division will attract professionals working in areas, including but are not limited to:

  • Manufacturing systems
  • Emergency services and response
  • Healthcare delivery systems
  • Virtual, augmented and mixed reality, and immersive technology
  • Training, education and pedagogical and instructional methodologies
  • Energy systems
  • Defense and military
  • Cybersecurity
  • Decision Analysis
  • Simulation and Optimization
  • Public Safety
  • Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) Simulations

Mission

The mission of the Modeling & Simulation (M&S) Division of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) is to provide its membership with a body of knowledge, networking opportunities, recognition and educational programs to stay competitive in the global market.

Vision

The M&S Division is the leading Division in IISE that promotes and shares innovative ideas in the field of modeling and simulation, as well as facilitates networking and increases ties between members from academia and industry.

Purpose

  • Develop, maintain, and disseminate a body of technical knowledge with a focus on modeling and simulation.
  • Provide a forum for technical networking for its members.
  • Be perceived as the voice of the modeling and simulation community.
  • Provide the means to promote excellence in teaching, industry and research.
  • Support IISE’s mission, provide member value, and promote the discipline.
