Description
Hospitals are more similar to busy airports or even battlefields than Toyota Production lines. The differences include the inherent systemic variability, complex interdependencies, and constant system evolution. This presentation will describe new thinking and tools for the enhanced analysis of our complex systems.

Abstract
Hospitals are more similar to busy airports or even battlefields than Toyota Production lines. This is due to the inherent and system variability, complex and constantly changing interdepedencies, and system evolution. Why, then, do we rely on "static" tools like spreadsheets and flowcharts? Furthermore, why are our methodologies so "process-centric", often failing to effectively account for the upstream and downstream interdependencies that deeply impact system performance?

The presentation will present DCAMM: Dynamic Capcity Analysis, Matching, and Management, as an important adjunct to the existing methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma. By focusing on the ranges of variability, the systemic interdependencies, and predictive analytics, DCAMM can take hospitals from reactive and sub-optimal mangement to a more proactive, predictive, and effective management of these complex systems. The results will be better workflow, better staffing, and better patient throughput.
